Crested Geckos are well adapted to their environment feeding on insects, fruits and nectar. Crested Geckos are also capable of determining palatable foods by smell. Generally speaking a reptiles diet in captivity is less varied in comparison to that of one in nature. For this reason it is important to offer your reptiles the most nutritional diet available.
If you read any publication on Crested Geckos (including cousins), Day Geckos, or any fruit eating gecko; you become familiar with Allen Repashy and a formulated diet, often unnamed but recommended, by the author. With Allen's colony of Crested Geckos, one of the largest in the United States, he has been able to develop and fine tune a diet that can sustain fruit eating geckos even through the demanding process of breeding. When we look for food to offer our pets we often look for the ingredients to be natural and high grade. Allen has spared no expense in this department and after a quick glance we were onto ordering and testing the food.
There are two forms of the diet that we offer. Crested Gecko MRP which is the original formula with Strawberry and Banana flavor combined and also Mango and Peach sold separate. The second is the Day Gecko MRP which is a sweeter formula with Cherry and Fig flavoring which Day Geckos go crazy for. We used to offer the Two Part Crested Gecko Diet until it was discontinued.
Feeding Crested Gecko Diet
A single Crested Gecko will eat approximately 4 ounces over the course of a month. We like to offer the diet three days a week -- Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We allow the leftovers to stay in the enclosure until the following feeding day. This allows the diet to ripen, which in our experience, increases the feeding response. On days that we feed CGD we do not offer live feeders. There is enough calcium and Vitamin D3 provided in the complete formula and to err on the side of caution we do not want to offer too much Calcium/Vitamin D3 as that holds the same reprocussions as not enough. We recommend dusting all feeeder insects with a Calcium powder with Vitamin D3 such as "Calcium Plus ICB" for nocturnal species that are not under direct full spectrum lighting.
Although developed for Crested Geckos other fruit eating geckos will benefit from the nutritional value of the Diet. Eurydactylodes, Lygodactylus, Phelsuma, Bavayia, Gehyra, Gekko (Golden Geckos and White-Lined Geckos).
CGD comes in a resealable bag and after opening you can store in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.
