Crested Gecko Diet in the wild will feed on insects, fallen fruits, nectar, small mammals, and reptiles. Crested Geckos are also capable of determining palatable foods by smell. Generally speaking a geckos diet in captivity is less varied in comparison to that of one in nature. For this reason, it is important to offer your reptiles the most nutritional diet available -- Crested Gecko Diet.
If you read any publication on Crested Geckos (including cousins), Day Geckos, or any fruit-eating gecko; you become familiar with Allen Repashy and a formulated diet, often unnamed but recommended, by the author -- Crested Gecko Diet. With Allen's colony of Crested Geckos, one of the largest in the United States at one time, he was able to develop and fine-tune a diet that can sustain fruit eating geckos even through the demanding process of breeding. When we look for food to offer our pets, we often look for the ingredients to be natural and high grade. Allen Repashy has spared no expense in this department, and after a quick glance we were onto ordering and testing the food.
There are four complete Crested Gecko Diets, insect meal replacement and one treat, by Repashy Superfoods, that we offer. We used to offer the Two Part Crested Gecko Diet (Flavor in one bag, the nutritional backbone in the other) until it was discontinued.
Crested Gecko Diet MRP "Original"
The original MRP that made keeping frugivorous geckos easier. Years of research went into this formula. Flavored with a mix of Banana, Date, Fig, and Watermelon for feeding response. Back in 2013, this Crested Gecko Diet had changed from a whey/egg protein combination to pea protein. The change did not go over well with picky eaters, and It has since reformulated with a combination of pea/rice protein. It's now a solid product.
Crested Gecko Diet MRP "Classic"
The formula before the 2013 protein change is the Classic formula and released at the request of the breeding community in large to accommodate the geckos who were accustomed to the previous formula of the MRP. This formula has whey and dried egg for protein sources. The flavor is the same with Banana, Honey, Date, Fig, and Watermelon.
Grubs N Fruit
The first ingredient in Grubs N Fruit is Insect Meal (Black Soldier Fly Larvae) which is an amazing protein source packed with amino acids. The flavoring is diverse with Banana, Date, Mango, Watermelon, Fig, Papaya, Pineapple, and Blueberry. This product does not give us the best feeding response but its right up there with Black Panther Zoological. Tip: Add a bit of Banana Cream Pie to the mix for flavoring.
Crested Gecko Diet Mango MRP Superblend
We keep this in rotation with the original formula. It has Dried Mango, Banana, Date, Fig, and Watermelon for flavor. This diet is formulated with whey, egg, insect meal, pea and rice protein for not only feeding response but amino acids that would normally be consumed in the natural diet. All the while it's a complete Crested Gecko Diet.
Banana Cream Pie
Who doesn't want to treat their pets every once in a while? This is a treat that can be made a couple of different ways. As a smoothie or a treat to be lapped up by geckos, a gel as a healthy treat to replace Jelly Pots, or as a salad dressing for omnivorous species. If we have a picky eater, we use it to stimulate a feeding response and then taper down the amount included in the food to get geckos eating a healthier diet. Banana Cream Pie is not a complete diet and meant as a treat only. See the directions on the page for further information.
A single Crested Gecko will eat approximately 4 ounces over the course of a month. We like to offer the diet three days a week -- Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We allow the leftovers to stay in the enclosure until the following feeding day. The amount of time allows the diet to ripen, which in our experience, increases the feeding response. On days that we feed CGD, we do not offer live feeders. There is enough calcium and Vitamin D3 provided in the complete formula and to err on the side of caution we do not want to offer too much Calcium/Vitamin D3 as that holds the same repercussions as not enough. We recommend dusting all feeder insects with a Calcium Powder containing Vitamin D3 such as "Calcium Plus ICB" for nocturnal species that are not under direct full spectrum lighting.
Although developed for Crested Geckos other fruit eating geckos will benefit from the nutritional value of the Diet. Eurydactylodes, Lygodactylus, Phelsuma, Bavayia, Gehyra, Gekko (Golden Geckos and White-Lined Geckos).
CGD comes in a jar, and after opening, you can store in the refrigerator for up to 6 months. Refrigerate already mixed Crested Gecko Diet for up to 5 days, but I recommend only 3. I do not recommend Freezing Crested Gecko Diet as it changes the nutritional value.
